Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) and its local authorized distributor, Omnix Qatar Company, today announced the successful completion of a project with Mowasalat, the leading provider of taxi, limousine and public and private bus services in Qatar, for the supply of Motorola TETRA radio solutions.

The Motorola TETRA solutions, which include radio terminals and ancillary equipment to enable installation in vehicles, will provide Mowasalat with better control and monitoring of its fleet while on the road.

Mowasalat selected Motorola’s MTH800 TETRA portable and MTM800 TETRA mobile terminals, with car kits and dashboard mounts, which use Qatar Telecommunications’ (Qtel) TETRA network to link vehicles on the road with Mowasalat’s control center. The Motorola solution supports both voice and data communications, with support for GPS, which enables the company to monitor vehicles on the road and integrate communications with dispatch and control software on the back end to enable efficient management and control of vehicles and deliver improved services to its customers.

“Mowasalat’s communications needs changed significantly as a result of our recent fleet expansion, and this resulted in our migration to a TETRA solution. Motorola’s TETRA offering delivers much lower operating costs than alternative solutions, and also gives greater flexibility and opportunities for expansion of services in the future. Motorola supplied a wide range of terminals that were designed for in-vehicle use, together with accessories and other equipment that allowed us to complete installation into the different types of vehicles we operate, and also were able to offer strong support with its distributor Omnix,” said Ahmed Abd Al Aziz Al Ansari, marketing manager, Mowasalat.

“Another major factor was time to deploy the new Motorola solution, as we needed the first phase of the project in place to handle the massive increase in custom that was predicted for the 2006 Asian Games, held in Doha in December. Following an intensive initial deployment phase, we were able to meet our target for deployment well ahead of the Games, and had the benefit of enhanced communications to improve services during the games,” he added.

The final stages of the project have been completed successfully, with 1,800 Mowasalat vehicles now connected to the system, speeding up Karwa response to customer requests for taxi services, and improving overall dispatch and fleet management.

“Motorola TETRA solutions are in operation with transport companies around the world, because they value the reliability and the advanced features that digital radio technology can offer. For Mowasalat, our open-standard solutions will enable them to introduce many more integrated solutions in future, to further improve services to customer and to enhance the effectiveness of their operations,” said Hans-Joachim Wirth, sales director, Middle East and Pakistan, Motorola Networks & Enterprise.

“We at Omnix are very pleased to be associated with such a large and significant project which will have a positive impact on the speed of services to Mowasalat’s customers. We regard this project as a long-term relationship with Mowasalat and we will continue to ensure the highest level of services and support for them,” said Mahmoud El Deeb, executive director, Omnix Qatar.

Mowasalat has a growing fleet of 2,000 taxis, 400 limousines, and more than 1,000 buses, offering a wide range of transport solutions, including the ‘Karwa’ taxi service, public and school bus services, and hire and leasing of limousines and buses. The company significantly enlarged its fleet of vehicles to cope with growing demand, especially ahead of the 2006 Doha Asian Games, and required an enhanced voice and data communications system to manage fleet operations.

Revenue on this contract was recognized in 2006.
