City of Stamford Selects Motorola for New Communications System and Comprehensive Suite of Support Services

The city of Stamford, Conn., has selected Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) to deploy and support a new multi-million dollar 800 MHz, four site, trunked radio system for its Stamford All-City Communications (SACCOM) infrastructure.

The new system, based on the ASTRO® 25 standard, will provide Stamford public safety and municipal agencies with a two-way voice and data enabled, citywide interoperable communications system by year-end 2007. The new system will also be fully compatible and interoperable with Connecticut’s existing State Tactical On-scene Channel System (STOCS).

“The city of Stamford wanted to be proactive and ensure the momentum for a new communications system didn’t come from a major incident that would show the shortcomings of our present aging system,” said William Callion, director of public safety for the city of Stamford. “Developing a unified, interoperable communications system will provide the city with a powerful tool substantially increasing our effectiveness not only on a daily basis, but especially in times of emergency when command and control is paramount.”

Stamford’s aging private communications infrastructure presented challenges to users due to inadequate coverage in numerous areas, limited channel capacity, upgrade issues and maintenance difficulties. The new system, which will provide enhanced interoperable coverage both inside and outside city buildings and underground, includes four simulcast sites with 10 channels each, 13 console positions at primary and backup dispatch centers and more than 1,600 XTS® 2500 and XTL® 2500 encrypted subscribers.

To ensure the system’s ongoing quality of performance and to keep support costs within an identified cap, Stamford worked with Motorola to create a comprehensive services strategy. Specifically, SACCOM will implement Motorola’s Upgrade Assistance Program for three years of consecutive network support once the initial Enhanced Support Services warranty phase expires. Motorola’s Upgrade Assistance Program includes year-round 24×7 network monitoring, replacement, end-to-end project management and system optimization services.
