Cisco Accelerates Delivery of “Any Stream to Any Screen” with Adobe Flash Streaming Enhancements to the Cisco Content Delivery System

Cisco® and Adobe® Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) today announced that the Cisco Content Delivery System (CDS) will be the first system of its type to natively support Adobe Flash® streaming capabilities, in addition to traditional progressive delivery.

Service providers and organizations of all types using the Cisco CDS will be able to deliver Adobe Flash Player compatible video to PCs, and TVs using Adobe Flash streaming capabilities, accelerating the Cisco CDS’ ability to deliver “any stream to any screen.” This solution will include the recently announced Adobe Flash® Media Server 3 software (see separate release).

“The Cisco CDS combination of traditional content delivery and Adobe streaming technologies in a single high-performance solution provides a compelling infrastructure for reliably delivering high-quality content to our customers,” said Sam Schwartz, executive vice president of Comcast Interactive Media. “CDS represents an important milestone in the evolution toward a consistent content delivery architecture for both highly secure and advertising-enabled media across Internet, mobile and traditional platforms.”

The Cisco CDS is a highly extensible platform for content and rich-media service delivery including streaming intensive Web services, video on demand, time shifted television, video ad insertion and next-generation content delivery network (CDN) services. The Cisco CDS family is part of the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture, a highly modular architectural framework based on international standards and industry best practices. The Cisco IP NGN enables the development of converged IP infrastructures designed to deliver next-generation video, voice and data services with mobility.

The CDS implementation of Adobe Flash Media Server 3 will offer the full benefits of Adobe Flash technology including improved performance for faster user response and increased streaming protection to ensure that valuable content is better protected as it is delivered to viewers. The CDS platform provides additional benefits for the hosting and distribution of Flash Player compatible video content and services including content and service routing, dynamic hierarchical caching, load balancing, failover protection, IP multicast extensions, unified management tools, and end-to-end quality-of-service (QoS) support.

Adobe Flash Media Server 3 and the Flash product line are the leading solutions for creating and delivering interactive rich-media applications across browsers and operating systems. The ubiquity of the Adobe Flash Player, coupled with an array of streaming options enables users to view interactive video online as a truly hassle-free, instant-on Web video experience. The Flash family of products enables organizations to develop customized Websites and applications with complete control over playback, interactivity and branding. Rich media professionals have a complete, cross-platform, integrated workflow that enables them to create and deliver visually innovative projects once and deliver them to a variety of outlets including television, the Web and mobile devices.

“With the addition of Adobe Flash Media Server 3 in the Cisco CDS, we are expanding the Flash ecosystem and continuing to offer our customers more deployment options,” said Jim Guerard, vice president of Dynamic Media for Adobe. “By creating a new integrated solution, Adobe and Cisco are offering unique ways to create, distribute and consume content, bringing a new level of interactivity and community to end-users while providing content distributors with more delivery options than ever before.”

“Cisco and Adobe share a common vision of delivering any content, anywhere, anytime, to any device,” said Paul Bosco, vice president of video and broadband initiatives for Cisco. “Support for Adobe Flash Media Server 3 streaming on the CDS platform will greatly enhance our customers’ ability to deliver any stream to any of the wired, wireless and mobile devices in our connected lives – including an increasingly consistent user experience. The Cisco CDS platform provides an ideal foundation on which to build and scale the distribution and delivery of Adobe Flash Media Server 3 applications and streaming services.”
