Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, yesterday announced the worldwide availability of JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 4.2. Enterprise companies now have a high-value, low-cost platform on which to migrate legacy applications to an open source architecture.

The Application Platform combines the leading open source Java application server, JBoss, with the award-winning Hibernate persistence engine, and the innovative JBoss Seam framework into a single integrated, tested, and certified platform for Java applications. Customers can now benefit from enhanced developer and production support subscriptions that include everything needed to deploy and host Java applications.

Red Hat’s middleware solutions put customers back in control of their IT infrastructure, enabling them to drive out costs and to avoid vendor lock-in. The first of several certified distributions Red Hat will be delivering for specific use cases, the Application Platform offers customers the best of both worlds: enterprise-class stability in mission-critical production environments as well as accessibility to the most current innovations driven out of the JBoss.org open source community. Application Platform will be a foundational piece for future enterprise platforms, including the JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform and the JBoss SOA Platform, both targeted for later in the year.

Enterprise companies have already realized tremendous cost savings and flexibility by migrating from Unix to Linux. Application Platform lets them extend those benefits to their applications, said Shaun Connolly, vice president of product management, JBoss, a division of Red Hat. Our customers want a simpler way to develop on JBoss, a seamless way to get software updates and patches, and a guaranteed path to production-all at a fraction of the cost of proprietary platforms. Application Platform delivers on these and much more.

Key components in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 4.2 include JBoss Application Server 4.2, Hibernate 3.2.4, JBoss Seam 1.2 and JBoss Transactions 4.2.3. Because of JBoss Application Server’s microkernel-based, pluggable architecture, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) 5.0 features such as Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 (EJB3), JavaServer Faces (JSF) and the new JBoss Web Services Stack can be used immediately with the Application Platform. Features include:

  • JBoss Application Server, fully integrated with Hibernate and Seam
  • Support for both traditional application programming interfaces (APIs) and Java EE APIs
  • Embedded Apache Tomcat 6
  • Improved caching, clustering and transaction capabilities
  • Complete web services stack
  • Support for the full range of J2EE 1.4 services with extended support for the common Java EE 5 features

JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 4.2 has been certified on many different operating systems, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows; Java Virtual Machines from BEA, HP and SUN; and databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and Postgres SQL.

Subscription support for Application Platform is immediately available today directly from Red Hat, on the Red Hat Store or from Red Hat resellers. For more information, visit http://www.redhat.com/jboss/platforms/application.
