IBM hat gestern einen Ausblick auf die neue Version des integrierten Betriebssystems für System i, i5/OS, gegeben, das voraussichtlich 2008 angekündigt wird.
i5/OS Version 6 wird bedeutende neue Sicherheitsfeatures, Webservices- und Virtualisierungseigenschaften mitbringen, um Unternehmen eine weitere optimierte Nutzung ihrer IT-Ressourcen zu ermöglichen. Zusätzlich hat IBM heute das erste System i-Modell vorgestellt, das den POWER6-Prozessor, einen der schnellsten Mikroprozessoren weltweit, in sich trägt.
Die neue IBM Power-Systems-Geschäftsorganisation wurde am 19. Juli vorgestellt und umfasst sowohl System p- als auch High-End System i-Produkte für Enterprise-Kunden und erlaubt es IBM, intensiver auf die speziellen Bedürfnisse dieses Kundenkreises einzugehen. Die neue Unit unterstreicht das Bestreben von IBM, leistungsfähige POWER-Serversysteme zu liefern, und baut auf das fortlaufende Investment, die Integration und einfache Handhabung von i5/OS weiter zu entwickeln.
Zu den neuen i5/OS V6R1-Features, die den IT-Betrieb vereinfachen können, zählen:
- Ein Verschlüsselungsfeature, das Unternehmen beim Schutz ihrer vitalen Daten unterstützt, indem Daten verschlüsselt auf einem Platten- oder Bandspeicher abgelegt werden
- Virtualisierungsunterstützung, die es einer i5/OS-Partition erlaubt, Speicher für eine andere i5/OS-Partition zu hosten. Auf diese Weise kann die die Notwendigkeit für separate Partitionen, ihre eigene individuelle Hardware zu unterhalten, eliminiert werden. Dies erleichtert es Kunden erheblich, neue i5/OS-Applikationen flexibel zu testen und einzuführen.
- Utilities für einfachere Anwendungseinführung und bessere Integration mit Webservices und ein integrierter Web-Application-Server, der die Einführung von Java-Applikationen erleichtert und nur minimale Systemressourcen und einen geringen Verwaltungsaufwand benötigt
Zusätzlich wird System i als Teil der Power-Systems-Division die Ausschöpfung von IBM Investments innerhalb des Portfolios der Systems and Technology Group weiter vertiefen. So wird i5/OS V6R1 beispielsweise den IBM Systems Director nützen und die existierenden Managementkapazitäten von System i erweitern, um gemischte IT-Umgebungen wie UNIX oder Windows besser unterstützen zu können. Außerdem wird die Integration mit System Storage von IBM wesentlich vorangetrieben. .
Durch das Engagement von IBM im Bereich der Integration neuer Anwendungen auf der System i-Plattform kann IBM den Kunden ein breites Portfolio an neuen Open-Source-Applikationen und Entwicklungsoptionen bieten, die diese mit i5/OS betreiben können.
IBM kombiniert System i mit POWER6.
IBM hat auch das neue System i 570 vorgestellt, das den POWER6, einen der schnellsten Mikroprozessoren weltweit, einsetzt. Dieses flexible und leistungsstarke System kann mittelständischen und großen Unternehmen dabei helfen, neue Stufen der Betriebseffizienz zu erreichen mit bis zu doppelter Anwendungsleistung gegenüber bestehenden Modellen und Optionen auf bis zu 16-Wege-Konfigurationen.
Der i570 kann so konfiguriert werden, dass auf ihm multiple Transaktions-, Collaborations- und Webapplikationen gleichzeitig in bis zu 160 separaten “virtuellen” Serverpartitionen ablaufen, die sich IT- und Betriebsressourcen auf einem einzelnen System teilen. Der neue POWER6 i570 hat eine flexible Struktur mit zusätzlichen Capacity on Demand-Ressourcen, um es dem System zu ermöglichen, mit dem Unternehmen des Kunden “mitzuwachsen”.
Mit dem i570 stellt IBM eine neue, flexible i5/OS-Edition Pricing-Struktur vor, die es Kunden erleichtern soll, für die wirklich genutzte Software, Middleware und Features zu bezahlen.
Preis und Verfügbarkeit
Die System i570-Server mit POWER6 werden – basierend auf i5/OS V5R4 – voraussichtlich ab September erhältlich sein und etwa ab 165.000 US-Dollar kosten. I5/OS V6R1 wird voraussichtlich 2008 verfügbar sein.
IBM GTS (Global Technology Services) bietet Services, um Kunden dabei zu helfen, die Planungs-, Implementierungs- und Integrationszeit für den Einsatz von neuen System i POWER6-basierten Servern im Produktionsumfeld zu reduzieren. ARMONK, NY – July 24, 2007: IBM previewed today a major new release of its flagship integrated operating system, i5/OS, expected in 2008. i5/OS Version 6 will feature significant new security, Web services and virtualization capabilities to help businesses get the most out of their IT operations. IBM also announced the first System i offering to feature POWER6, the fastest microprocessor ever built.
“Today we’re announcing the first product from IBM’s new Power Systems business unit,” said Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM Power Systems. “Nearly half of IBM’s systems clients today have i5/OS installed in their enterprise. IBM will continue to build on the integrated, easy-to-use value proposition of i5/OS so clients can rely on the operating system for their most mission critical business solutions.”
The new, enterprise-focused Power Systems business unit announced July 19 includes both System p and high-end System i products for enterprise clients and will allow IBM to better address the unique focus and specific demands of these customers. The new unit demonstrates IBM’s commitment to delivering leadership POWER systems as well as its ongoing investment to advance the integration and ease of use of i5/OS.
New i5/OS V6R1 features that help simplify IT operations include:
- An encryption feature to help companies further protect vital data by encrypting data that is held on disk devices and backed up to tape.
- Virtualization support that allows one i5/OS partition to host storage for another i5/OS partition. This will eliminate the requirement for separate partitions to maintain their own, individual hardware, making it much easier for clients to flexibly test and deploy new i5/OS applications.
- Utilities for simpler deployment and better integration with Web services as well as an integrated Web application server to simplify the deployment of Java applications with minimal system resources and administration.
Further, as part of the Power Systems division, System i will exploit IBM’s investments across its Systems and Technology Group portfolio. For example, i5/OS V6R1 will take advantage of IBM Systems Director — extending the current management capabilities of System i to better support a mixed environment that includes other operating systems like UNIX and Windows — and enhanced integration and performance with IBM System Storage.
Thanks to IBM’s investments to bring new applications to the System i platform, customers have a broad portfolio of thousands of new open source applications and development options they can run with i5/OS. For example, SugarCRM announced today that it will make its leading commercial open source customer relationship management (CRM) software available for i5/OS.
IBM Brings World’s Fastest Chip to System i
IBM also unveiled today the new System i 570 featuring POWER6, the fastest microprocessor ever built. This powerful, versatile system will help medium and large enterprises achieve new levels of operational efficiency with up to twice the application performance and modular options up to 16-way configurations.
The i570 can be customized to run multiple transactional, collaborative and Web applications simultaneously in up to 160 separate “virtual” server partitions that share computing and operations resources on a single system. The new POWER6 i570 has a flexible structure with additional Capacity on Demand resources to make more stand-by power available and enable the system to easily grow with a clients’ business.
With the i570, IBM will introduce a new, flexible i5/OS Edition pricing structure to better enable clients to pay for the software, middleware and features they use.

Pricing and Availability
The System i570 with POWER6 processors will be available with i5/OS V5R4 in September starting at $165,000. i5/OS V6R1 is expected to be available in 2008.
